Fellow member, Darren King, has sadly died after a short illness.
He will be greatly missed by us all for his cheerful friendly manner and particularly by his team mates in the ‘C’ team where his consistent play won numerous matches over many years.
On behalf of the Club, we pass on our deepest condolences to his family.

12th June 2021
Andover Tennis Club’s men’s C Team played their first match of 2021 at Balksbury, playing hosts to Beechdown C of Basingstoke in league three of The Basingstoke League. The matches were played on the superb indoor courts which made for the ideal environment, free of breeze and direct sun.
The Andover pairing of Ben Mead and Mark Williams started against the number two partnership from Beechdown. Initially both sides were cautious with their play keeping unforced errors to a minimum. Beyond the fourth game the hitting of the Andover pair upped a gear and with superior shot placement, they went onto win both sets comfortably 6-3, 6-1.
The second match for Mead and Williams against the stronger Beechdown pairing was a closer game. Cross court rallies from the base line were a consistent feature. The Andover pair, however, made fewer unforced errors which along with a better servicing percentage saw them always ahead in the scoring and finally winning through 6-3, 6-4.
Andover’s second pairing of Andy Taylor and Lewis Nicholls proved to be even more impressive on the day in terms of score line achieved. The solid hitting of Lewis combined with the reliable volleying of Taylor made a great doubles partnership. Against the stronger Beechdown pairing, Taylor and Lewis came through 6-2, 6-3 edging superiority in most areas.
The second match for Taylor and Lewis was comprehensive at 6-0, 6-0. A clear and successful feature was the speed of Nicholls’ serve and base line shot opening up the opponent’s returns to the Taylor volleying. With no relaxation, the win was comprehensive as could be.
All told an 8-0 result on the first outing was a job well done. With a run of games to come in the next two months and a squad of players enabling a rotation, the prospect for the C Team’s first summer in League 3 is promising. whilst realizing stronger challenges are to come.

In their first home match the team played Salisbury B and came out winners by 8-0 although a lot of close sets were played.
At Sallisbury, against their A team, the going was tougher.
The match started evenly. Kate Gailey and Kyrill Kennett shared sets against the first pair; 3-6,6-4. Neat, clever play by Gailey balanced Kennett’s powerful all round game against a good pair.
Jennie Pope and Alex Boldis had similar fortune against the second pair also ending one set all; 4-6,6-1.
In the Sarum format, the mixed matches are followed by a Ladies and a Men’s match.
The ladies found it hard going against an established pair and Salisbury won 6-1, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Andover’s two young men had a battle against more experienced opposition. The power of Kennett’s shots is impressive and Boldis has great athleticism but experience is often crucial and Salisbury won a close encounter 7-5 6-4.
The match went to Salisbury by 6-2.
New ladies vets captain Sophie Annett and her team started their Summer campaign at the Riverside Club, Salisbury. They had an enjoyable match but Riverside came out winners.
Their first victory came against Warsash on Andover’s indoor courts at Balksbury.
Andover’s first pair was Claire Reid and Rowena Thorne, celebrating her selection for Hampshire vets. They had a very long and tiring match against the Warsash first pair.
With Reid’s strong forehand drives and Thorne’s stylish backhands they pushed the very good Warsash pair all the way but just lost the first set 5-7.
A change of tactics was required and this they did, mixing up the play and earning a close second set on a tie break, 7-6.
In this format, a championship tie break is played. This was as close as it could be, with the visitors eventually getting a net cord at 9-8 to take it 10-8.
With their breath back after a short break, Reid and Thorne cruised to a comfortable 6-1,6-0 win over the Warsash second pair.
Annett and Kitson had achieved an identical score against the same pair, with powerful driving from Kitson and good court coverage from Annett.
They also had a good match against the impressive Warsash first pair and had a close first set, but lost out 4-6, 2-6.
With rubbers even, the set won by Reid and Thorne proved vital, giving Andover the tightest of victories by 5 sets to 4.
It was a close match played in the best of spirits and all agreed it had been thoroughly enjoyable.
On Saturday 22nd May we hosted our annual Road to Wimbledon U14s Tournament. Unfortunately the event was cancelled last year and it was great to see 19 of our Juniors aged between 10-14 competing. Over half were playing in their very first competition and there were plenty of hard fought matches in both the boys and the girls event.
Congratulations to our Winners Isaac Robinson and Maria Sharova plus our Runners-up Monty Johnston and Karolina Miller. All 4 juniors now progress to the County Finals held next month and an opportunity to progress through to the National Finals held at The All England Club, Wimbledon.
All players are club members and part of our coaching programme and all acquitted themselves very well with no disputes and all matches were played in the right spirit. Hopefully this event will spur many of them on to play more competitions and matches in the future.
If anyone would like information on other LTA Competitions that we run or anything to do with Tournaments please do not hesitate to get in touch with Josh - Head Coach.
The first match of the Summer season at Andover Lawn Tennis Club even more welcome than usual after all matches were cancelled last year.
The club has two teams in the First Division of the Basingstoke League and the match between the two has to be the first played, so internal rivalries were explored in a competitive but friendly match at the club’s Balksbury courts.
The KJM sponsored A team was made up of the youngest player, Kyrill Kennett, with the most experienced, Shaun McDonald and Coach George Beare playing with Alex Boldis.
The A team first pair of Kennett and McDonald took on B team captain Morgan Jameson and Reece Simpson. Kennett’s powerful serving and groundstrokes were well complemented by McDonald’s superb volleying. In spite of good play from Jameson and Simpson, the A team pair too often had the final shot and they came out winners 6-0, 6-2.
The A team second pair, George Beare and Alex Boldis, meanwhile, took on Harvey Stuart and Milan Garbuja. Beare and Boldis won the first set comfortably but were made to dig deep in the second set with much athletic retrieving on both sides of the net. They eventually came through, 6-0, 7-6.
In the opposite games, Kennett and McDonald started smoothly in control winning the first set 6-0, but they too had to fight in the second set which went to Stuart and Garbuja 6-4.
Beare and Booldis ,having had their competitive spirits rouised were full of confidence and although Jameson and Simpson both hit a lot of great shots, the A team pair generally had the best of the exchanges and won through 6-0, 6-2.
The A team won overall by 7 sets to 1 but both teams will be ready for further competition against the other top clubs.

Each year, the Club organises a '100' club to raise funds for the club. Please support your club - you could be a winner too.
For those of you unfamiliar with what a 100 Club is, it involves a payment of £12 per year which gives you a number for a year (you can have as many numbers as you like be it for yourself or family and friends) which will then be entered into a quarterly draw. There will be three cash prizes drawn per quarter with 50% of ticket sales being paid out in prizes and 50% going to the club.
If you would like to support this fundraiser, please view and complete the form on our ‘100’ Club page.
