'July' Player of the Month

Player of the month - July Meredith.jpg

Meredith always turns up with a smile on her face and is incredibly ‘teachable’. She recently entered her first 3 red ball tournaments and her game has improved hugely in the last few weeks. She works hard and the coaches are glad to see that is being rewarded with a real improvement in her standard recently.

Congratulations Meredith!

Andover Club’s Mixed Tennis team make good start to their season

Captain Andrew Winnett was able to put out a strong team for Andover Lawn Tennis Club’s first Summer fixture against Hampshire Court A from Basingstoke.

A team summer report 0619.jpg

Winnett and Coomer have played mixed doubles since they were teenagers and have a really good understanding and an array of strategies. On this occasion, playing the opposition first pair, they opted for patient maneuvering. Coomer’s accurate placement and ability to absorb pace gave Winnet a lot of opportunities at the net. Coupled with his ability overhead and speed to reach drop shots, the visitors had few chances to win a rally. The Andover pair won both sets 6-1 and 6-2.

Webb and Gailey are a much newer combination but Gailey has exemplary movement always putting herself in position to make a good shot and Webb has strong shots with a lot of topspin. Against the second Hampshire court pair, Webb gained a lot of volley and overhead winners after clever placement from Gailey. They came out on top by the same score 6-1, 6-2.

Winnett and Coomer moved on to win against the same pair by 6-1, 6-2.

Webb and Gailey had a battle against the first pair, who had more of the play this time and began to boss the rallies with carefully placed shots. With no pace coming at you, it is easy to overhit but the Andover pair got used to the new rhythm and won the set on a tie break, 7-6. At that point the Hampshire Court pair were unable to continue due to an aggravated injury and conceded the set 6-0.

A 7-1 win against Hampshire Court A was a very good result.

There were 10 stations testing various Tennis shots, ball skills, racket skills and team-work. The children collected points for their teams and each team had one of our fantastic new Tennis Leaders from John Hanson School to accompany them and help with all the various challenges.

The Summer season starts for the Adult teams...

ALTC have three men’s teams in the Basingstoke League and all of them started their summer campaigns at the club’s Balksbury home.

The winter season saw the Men’s A narrowly lose the Division One title; by one set. The B team consolidated their position in Division One and the C team won Division 4.

Men’s C team; Darren King, Ben Mead,Richard Shipway and Andy Taylor at Balksbury.

Richard Shipway and Andy Taylor at Balksbury.

For the summer season, Keith Robinson has taken over the B team. Richard Shipway is the new C team Captain and it was his team that were first to play. The opponents were Oakley C and although Oakley showed prolonged resistance, the Andover team was too strong all round and emerged victors by 8-0.

Shipway and Andy Taylor won both rounds 6-3, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-2, with superior shot making and movement.  Ben Mead and Darren King kept the rallies short with accurate volleying and won 6-3, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1. The team aim to gain promotion and this was a great start.

The Men’s A team, sponsored by KJM this year, also had a first victory in a close match against the B team.

It was a new look A team with an average age under twenty and the B team were determined to put up a good show.

The A team first pair of Gregor Corcoran and George Beare won against B team firsts, Dan DeMarco and Andy Snellgrove, 6-2, 6-2. They were playing with confidence and power, but found their second match against Keith Robinson and Harvey Stuart more tricky as Robinson’s accurate lobbing and sharp interceptions upset their rythym. Stuart’s strong backhand and sharp movement also made life difficult. They did emerge winners 6-4, 6-4, but it had been close.

Younger pair, Kyrill Kennett and Myles Cole had ensured a win for the A team by beating Robinson and Stuart 6-4, 6-2 with a strong combination of power and movement.

The B team gained a consolation win at the end when De Marco and Snellgrove plotted a win by 6-4, 6-4 against the youngsters, taking the initiative with accurate, forcing net play.

The overall result was a 6 sets to 2 win for the A team; a good start for them and an encouraging one for the B team who had competed well.

Club Juniors perform at the Road to Wimbledon event ...

Ten boys and five girls competed this Saturday for the 14 and under Road to Wimbledon Singles Challenge at ALTC.

The Girls competition was played in one section with Egna Mutedzi coming third, Maria Sharova coming second and Flavia Zamfir proving too strong for the opposition as she emerged as the winner.

IMG_0766.jpg

The Boys competition had the first rounds played in two groups with Jack Murn emerging as the winner of Section A and Leshawn Clarke as the runner up. Third place went to Louis Tanner, who is developing his game well, with Toby Liversidge and Joseph Horne also playing confidently. In Section B Harri Putt was the narrow winner from Isaac Robinson in second place and Archie Stepney third. Mattie Cooke and Harry Richmond played very well within this group and, as they are much younger, showed great potential for the future. In the semi finals, Jack Murn had the greater physical strength against Isaac Robinson, a great retriever of the ball with excellent concentration. In the other semi final, Harri Putt had a tight contest against Leshawn Clarke, with both boys testing each other for every point. Harri eventually proving the winner.

IMG_0763.jpg

The final between Jack Murn and Harri Putt was a good match, both boys playing well and showing how much their game has improved through the club coaching. Jack was the winner 4-2. In the third place play off, Isaac Robinson beat Leshawn 4-2. Some really good tennis was played throughout the Afternoon with great sportsmanship between the players.

Jack and Flavia now represent the Andover Club at the Hampshire county round where we wish them every success on the Road to Wimbledon!

Local company KJM sponsors ALTC

At the start of the 2019 season, local company KJM agreed to become a sponsor of the club.

KJM were established in Andover in 1983 and have been supplying windows, doors and conservatories locally ever since.

Managing Director Mark Pearce was pleased to be able to support a local sports facility and agreed a three-year deal to have KJM's business promoted at the club premises as well as on team shirts.

The Club is delighted to establish this link with a prominent local company such as KJM and is very grateful for their sponsorship.

Youngsters do well for ALTC

The Club’s winter programme of matches has resumed after a short  Christmas break.

In the Basingstoke League the men’s A team had a straightforward win over Old Basing B. Shaun McDonald and Al Williams won both matches 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2. John Cadwell and Gregor Corcoran also proved too strong for the opposition winning 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1.

They then took on local rivals Goodworth Clatford. This was a closer match with Al Williams and Shaun McDonald winning three sets and Gregor Corcoran and Adrian Shapter winning two, to give them a 5-3 win overall.

The men’s B team has relied on youth and has given first senior matches to several of the club’s talented youngsters. Brothers Tommy and Mark Mackie helped the club to promotion last season and Kyril Kennett has played a lot of matches. Myles Cole is the latest junior to join the team. Myles, Kyril and Mark are fourteen years old. They need to be consistent and strong to hold their own in a senior match as well as having to cope with styles less coached than their own.  Myles and Kyril played their part in beating Old Basing B at Old Basing. They won both matches 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-4. Gareth Banning and Jacob Webb halved one match 6-7, 6-2 and won the other 6-0, 6-0.

Myles, Thomas, Kyril and Adrian

Myles, Thomas, Kyril and Adrian

The team found it harder against Old Basing A at Andover’s Indoor centre, but they put up a good show. Myles and Kyril faced the Basingstoke Singles Champion in the first pair but had some superb rallies of professional quality. The Old Basing pair had more consistency at that level and won 6-0, 6-2. The boys were not downhearted, however, and had a close match against the second pair sharing the sets 6-4, 2-6.

Adrian Shapter and Thomas Foster did well against the second pair, winning 7-5, 6-2 and put up a good show against the firsts but went down 3-6, 3-6.  This was a loss by 3-5 overall, but a great effort against a good team.

The A team are due to play the Old Basing A team so this should be a good test for them.
